Meditation is simply thinking about just one thing. You don’t need any extras, just peace and quiet.

Its better to start without any music or candles, just sit in a darkened room to begin with and when you get comfortable with that you could use them. Meditation is all about finding the inner you, so the less distraction the better. Its uncomfortable at first if you are not used to it, but persevere because the results are fantastic.

There are so many kinds of meditation that that is like asking for the recipe so you can cook dinner.
In general, get comfortable and relaxed, but not so much that you could go to sleep. Be in a quiet area away from distractions. If you do use incense, try to use a scent that you don’t use any other time, so that it builds up associations and helps you get started faster once you’ve had some practice.
In general, meditation involves focusing your mind on one subject, sensation or idea. Here is a link to a description of the meditation on Metta (loving-kindness). It’s in about the 4th paragraph.

Meditation on the sensation of the breath going in and out of your nose, on religious images, or on Nembutsu or certain mantras are also very popular.
Good luck!

Meditation is holistic relaxation excercises.
Since civilized societies began to emerge, meditation has evolved into a structured practice. Although there is not a lot of recorded information dealing with the history of meditation, its roots can be traced back to ancient times.
Some meditation experts suggest thinking of your mind as a glass of muddy water and meditation helps bring clarity. Many forms of meditation result in the clearing of one’s mind.

There are many different meditation techniques, but all of them have one thing in common: they all cause you to become more self-aware, more watchful of your thoughts, feelings and physical sensations.
Some techniques are still: for example, you sit and watch your breath. Others are active, asking you to move, dance, make sounds, etc.
Perhaps the best thing to do is look around at different techniques and find one which "feels right." Then go ahead and try it for a few weeks.
Why not try gibberish? Make all kinds of sounds, as long as they are not a real language. Loud sounds, soft sounds, angry sounds, sad sounds, just create any non-word sounds you like. Really get into it! And move your body around too.
After five or ten minutes, stop, and sit silently for five minutes, becoming aware of your thoughts, feelings, or sensations. Just watch. Do not try to change or fix anything. Love yourself, and accept whatever happens from your heart.
