Winter of 2008 turned out to be an intensely creative time for me. It was perhaps a disguised blessing that Australia’s East Coast experienced its coldest winter season in 60 years – indeed the perfect opportunity to stay indoors and focus on creating new music!

Music for The Quietening was composed during several “writing retreats” in some of the places that I find most beautiful, calm and inspiring close to where I live on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. I visited the ancient rainforests of The Bunya Mountains, The imposing Glasshouse Mountains and Blackall Range, and stayed in a rustic mud brick cottage with no electricity (but lots of candles and a great fireplace) on a hill in the the Noosa Hinterland.

When recording The Quietening, it was a pleasure to re-unite with the talented folk at Grevillea Studios, Brisbane and their amazingly beautiful 12ft Bosendorfer Grand Piano. As was the case with my previous CD releases, they have again produced a recording of first class quality. I also re-recorded several tracks the day after the original session, not because they were incorrect, but just to ensure that the tempo of each piece, while not exactly the same, gently flowed from one to the next.

I truly believe this to be the most inspired, focused and joyous I have ever felt while creating music. It is now my hope that you, the listener will be able to feel for yourself some of the absolute love, calm, gratitude and connectedness I experienced while making this album.

Please no comments saying I’m on drugs, or its not real. Do not judge me on how old I am, please.

I have a few questions, about Astral Travelling.

-Can I Astral Travel WITHOUT meditating (ever).
-Can I Astral Travel with music on. (Not calming).
-Would it help to listen to my ipod (Calming music) while trying to astral travel.
-Will I encounter spirits.
-Where do I go, when I start Astral traveling. Can I go anywhere I want?
-I am 12 years old, will this change anything.
-And, Is there any possibility I will be stuck outside my body.
-If I am woken, up with my spirit outside my body, will my spirit go back into my body?

I started when I was 14, using lucid dreaming as a springboard, which doesn’t require meditation. Meditation does help and can be a real adventure though, never say never on that one! For some lucid dreaming techniques see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucid_dream . Once you’re lucid, just turn off the dream scenery and you’ll find yourself in a vibrational state back in your bed and will be ready to float off.

Non-calming music won’t get you far, but calm ambient stuff with no lyrics might, especially if it contains binaural beats – google hemisync metamusic for more information on that. If you put binaurals on an ipod, use apple lossless format for best results.

You might meet other people or you might not, it depends where you go. I didn’t initially but often do nowadays. You don’t have any limits as to where you can go other than your beliefs – if you have trouble getting anywhere specific just try again another day, you usually discover it’s possible eventually.

I’ve been out many hundreds of times over the years and have never had the slightest problem with getting stuck outside my body. The real problem is staying out of it long enough to explore. The slightest noise or movement will send you back to your body so don’t worry about that!

I really find it hard to sleep because i am so anxious e.c.t. Do you know any relaxing, peace-full music i could listen to off youtube or that i could buy to help me get to sleep.

I have the same problem…

The music I listen to would be “Owl City”. EVERY night. I especially recommend the songs Hot Air Balloon, Rainbow Veins, The Saltwater Room (definitely this one!), Hello Seattle, I’ll Meet You There, West Coast Friendship, Dear Vienna…. really any Owl City song, though. I adore him. He’s kind of like a one man band… He does all of the music and vocals himself… though in the second CD (Maybe I’m Dreaming) Breanne Düren is featured in some of the songs.

I also listen to Copeland and Death Cab for Cutie lots… I recommend the newest CD from Copeland, and…wow, I’m not even sure where to start with Death Cab for Cutie… there are a ton of songs. I also really love the songs Love Affair, Control Freak, Coffee, By My Side, Eat Sleep Repeat, No One Really Wins, and a TON of others from Copeland. They have a ton of songs too… it’s a hard choice.

Some other great ones are Silhouettes by Swimming With Dolphins or Fast Car by Swimming With Dolphins (can be downloaded free from Myspace). Plus, the Owl City guy, Adam Young, is also in the band Swimming With Dolphins (he does the music, Austin Tofte sings).

Well, best of luck to you. You can’t get any better than Owl City…
